Clear and high expectations for student achievement at every level.
As a district, we need to reset our focus on student achievement and raise our expectations for excellence. Every single one of our sports teams strives to be best in the state—we believe we should be striving for that same goal academically. Our graduates should be well-prepared to enter the college or career program of their choice. This requires having, at minimum, a robust and comprehensive curriculum in every subject at every grade level that is in alignment with state standards and benchmarks. Our teachers and building administrators deserve every possible support our district can muster to ensure their success in helping every student reach their potential.
Earn trust by treating people with respect and acting with integrity and transparency.
We commit to acting with integrity, honesty and openness in all that we do. We will do our best to actively listen to the school community and keep them informed well in advance of decisions that will directly affect them. Disagreement and discourse are required ingredients for democracy to flourish, so we will respect differing viewpoints from the public and always ask for evidence to support decisions that are being made. We recognize that ultimately the Board is the voice of the community in our schools and our school leaders should be guided by that voice.
Deep and rich parent and community engagement with our schools.
We believe that parents are our first and most important partners and our children’s first and most important teachers. We believe that children are our community’s most precious resource, and our children have the capacity to learn at the highest levels. For this to happen, our parents need to understand what is trying to be accomplished in classrooms. Information on our instructional programs and outcomes should be easily accessible on the district web site so that parents can truly be partners in the education of their children.
Maintain safe, strong neighborhood schools.
We respect the role each school plays in building community in our neighborhoods and throughout the district. We commit to no more closing of neighborhood schools during our tenure on the board. As a community, we owe it to our children to provide well-maintained, up-to-date learning environments. Student safety will always be our highest priority.
Responsible management of taxpayer dollars.
We commit to managing district resources with the ultimate goal of having long-term strength and sustainability of our district. We recognize that difficult decisions may need to be made in the short-term, but we should always have an eye to the future. Balancing budgets should be a minimal expectation, not an unusual cause for celebration. District resources will align with instructional priorities.
